Summer here we come!

The first day of summer didn’t hold anything back and instead came with a heat wave. Seeing how hot it was we decided two things early in the day, one we weren’t going to be cooking or baking anything – it was a grill day! Two, we were going to do something that involved getting wet outdoors!

With those two switch-a-roos in the schedule we set out to focus on some history and geography. The kids watched episodes one and two of Liberty Kids while I set up our map tracing project. They had to re-watch it a couple of times because the first time they thought that the plot was really about a tea party and they seemed a little confused – who can blame them? So I had to sit them down and explain a lot of key vocabulary words for them and then finally things started to make sense. I think that when we’re ready to watch episode 3, we will re-watch it from the beginning 1 thru 3 to make sure it’s all making sense in their little minds.

Our next project is part of our ongoing summer project of making the map of the United States. For “A” we made Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, and Arkansas in which they decided to paint red. I’m excited to see how it all comes together when it’s all done. I just think it’s going to be a little too big that we’re going to have a tough time finding a good display location for it afterwards.

Seeing that we had a productive morning, it was time to face the sunshine and we did just that with our slip and slide. Gabby decided to practice her bear crawl on all fours and Bobby even practiced writing his name with the water on the concrete. They were so exhausted after playing for a couple of hours that they had the best nap they’ve had in years!

To finish up the night we read Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst and they practiced some more of their letter “A” with dad and drawing what they imagined Australia to look like because that’s where Alexander wanted to go to because he was having such a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

Alexander’s day may not have been any good, but ours was great!

Question of the day: How about you guys? What do you do for fun to beat the heat? We want to know!!

  1. Hmm… to beat the heat, we played a game of tag in the front sprinklers, made our own ice cream, and spent a good deal of time at the library. Can’t beat a good book!
